Data Validation

What is Data Verification?

Verification involves taking some data and checking it against a trustworthy central database. If the data is a perfect match with the data held in the central database, the information can be successfully verified.

For example, someone’s identity can be verified using their South African Identity Document (ID). This is because the South African Department of Home Affairs (DHA) maintains a central database with every South African citizen’s identification number.

What is Data Validation?

The process of data validation is carried out when there is not a central database that can be used to cross-check the data.

For example, a South African passport cannot be verified because there is no central database that anyone can crosscheck the passport against.

Instead, a South African passport can be validated. This means that the authenticity of the passport can be confirmed or denied. This validation is done by checking thousands of different data points within a photograph/scan of the passport using world-class machine learning technologies.

This process of validation is secure enough to validate that a specific South African passport is legitimate. However, until there is a central database against which passports can be checked, it is impossible to verify a passport.
